About THE EVENT

A screening night which seeks to present films for Emerging Film Makers.

Films are not chosen based on production quality, but by the unique ways the Film Makers tell their stories.

Emerging Films Festivals are not driven by the perfection of the technical aspects of film making, and hopes to seek out extraordinary story tellers with unique ways of presenting a visual narrative.

EARLY ENTRY FILM SELECTION

"LEITMOTIF"

A composer discovers a powerful entity in her new home – but will it be a blessing or a curse?

 

Directed and Produced by Will Scott

Will Scott is a Canberra-based creative. His recent film projects include ‘Leitmotif’, ‘Mortis Lux’, ‘The Little Spinster’, and ‘One of the Boys’. Award-winning projects of his include ‘Misfortune Cookie’ (Lights Canberra Action, 2017) and ‘Nadia’ (Avalonia Film Festival, 2017).
He holds a Certificate IV in Acting for Stage and Screen from Perform Australia. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Education (Secondary Arts) at the University of New England.

 

"BURNOUT"

The short film “Burnout” shows the childlike creativity that fuels our ideas and how that

can turn sour quickly if expended in large bursts too fast.

 

 

Directed and Produced by Jonathon Charlie Copson-Pacal

Jon Copson is a filmmaker based in WA. He attend John Curtin College Of The Arts and have recently won a scholarship to Sydney Film school through an award for his last film. He aspires to get into the film industry as soon as possible and direct major films in the near future.

 

"VR GRANDPA"

Given the body of his younger self, Gramps has a score to settle, chasing the Grim Reaper

through a multitude of worlds and virtual environments.


Directed and Produced by Ché Baker

Ché Baker is Canberras own Novelist and Feature Film Maker. While currently studying his PhD and finishing principle photography on anticipated film “States of Mind”,  VR Grandpa shot during Covid takes us on an exploratory journey using future film making techniques showcasing multifaceted visual story telling methods.

The Judging Criteria is as Follows
• Do the characters have depth?
• Is the story intriguing?
• Does the subject matter benefit the plot line?
• Are the locations supportive to the narrative?
• Is their sufficient plausible tension?

 

*The Gold and Silver Awards may be presented for either a film or a script.

 

Bronze Award
Either the Director and/or Producer of all screened films may apply for a Film Makers choice Certificate of excellence to be presented to one of the cast or crew members who worked on their film.

  • Either the writer, producer and/or the director of the film must be under the age of 25, or within there 1st two years of tertiary education.
  • Films may also be entered if the production of the film was completed while studying some form of media within a tertiary educational course.

* Exceptions to the above rules are only for short films that have been entirely shot prior to 2016.

 

  • The short must have been partially filmed, animated or produced within Canberra.
  • Submitted films cannot have been screened at a Theatre or accepted by another Festival.

* Exceptions can be made to films that have been extensively modified since their last screening.

LOCAL SHORT SCRIPTS

This category is for aspiring screen creatives unable to make a film, but have a vivid imagination.

  • The script must be within 16 pages including the title page, however the script is not required to follow a screenplay format, but must be written within a visual story telling narrative.
  • The Writer must also be either under the age of 25, within their first two years of Tertiary Education or studying some form of media.

LOCAL SHORT FILMS

Their are three main sections for this Category.
 
  • Up to 5 minutes
  • Up to 7 minutes
  • Under 15 minutes
Short films can be fictional, genre, documentary, animation, machinima musical or even feature presentations.

OVER 15 Minutes

* We also accept films over 15 minutes for submission, however only screen them if in the running for an award.

 

* We also have additional screen time in which we can collaborate with the film maker to screen film.
